Éco-peinture is a nonprofit corporation, funded entirely by its members who are recruited from the industry. Its mission is to promote and facilitate the recovery of paint residues and paint containers, to support and encourage the reclamation of recovered paint, and to contribute to waste recycling.
Created in 1997 by leading industry members, Éco-peinture brings together paint manufacturers and brand holders in Quebec. On behalf of its corporate members, it takes care of promoting the recovery and reclamation of paint residues. Its Board of Directors consists of people in the industry, the Ministry of the Environment, Recyc-Québec and representatives from the municipalities, environmental groups and consumer associations.
Éco-peinture is funded by the industry at the rate of 25¢ per paint container marketed in Quebec.
The regulation respecting the recovery and reclamation of discarded paint containers and paints, passed in June 2000, sets recovery objectives for the Quebec paint industry. As of 2002, the industry is required to reclaim 25% of the leftover architectural paint sold in the province each year. This minimum rate will be 50% in 2005 and 75% in 2008.
In order to deal with these strict requirements, which will have such a positive impact on the environment, the vast majority of paint manufacturers have already joined Éco-peinture.
